WHATS UP WITH THESE GUYS FROM SO CAL

What is it with these so cal guys??? I get more bull shit and grief from the D37 riders

Sender's Name:    Heywood Jablowmy

Sender's E-Mail:  Dist37_racer@yahoo.com Sender's Subject:  Your KIM "oil cooler"

Message:          The main reason KTM did not recommend the EXC 400-525 as a dual sport bike is the oil temp issue with the gearbox, and the gears running so hot at freeway speeds the hard face starts to chip. ************************************************************

NOT TRUE !  The MAIN reason is the Oil CAPACITY, or LACK OF. Get the facts before making such claims

The funny thing is I got this information form a long time so cal rider Rick Sieman( AKA Super Hunky.

Let’s see if we can educate this moron.

The stock KTM RFS (herein called the motor) has an oil capacity of about 1.2 liters. At sustained high speeds (herein called freeway speeds) over 60% of the oil will be either in the cylinder head (herein called the hottest part of the motor), and around the crank shaft. There are two pumps in the motor. One picks up oil from the forward sump and sprays the piston, crank bearings and lubes the cam and valves. The second pump picks up the Hot oil that drops from the cylinder head and sprays it on the gearbox. The first pump and the second pump have the same capacity and pressure. But the first pump pick up is closer to the front sump of the motor. To help with available oil some of the first pump oil is bypassed to the second filter which feeds the spray nozzle on the gear box. This is oil that is coming from the cylinder head. Which little oil is left to fall to the rear sump for the second filter is hotter then the forward sump by the fact there is less of it. Now remember everything in the motor is generating heat via our friend friction. The hotter oil gets the less it lubricates and more friction is generated. The oil gets hot enough and its starts to burn and produces carbon in micro particle size. Carbon is abrasive. If you don’t belive me put a small lump of coal in your engine and see what the end results look like. Adding oil adds to cooling by the fact of having more of a medium to remove heat. The radiators cool the cylinder and cylinder head. So what cools the oil, Nothing! The original motors where designed to do 120 mile races and then be serviced. Not 300 mile dual sports and put in the garage. Now the facts on hard facing and gears. Gears have what’s called a pressure angle at which there is actual metal to metal contact. Engineers tend to keep the angle to a minimum. How ever the smaller the pressure angle the less torque the gear can sustain but it can with less friction spin at higher RPM. If you don’t understand this get a book on gear design. The teeth of gears are hard faced, usually with a laser. This hard face is less then .0001 of an inch deep. That’s 1/200 of a human hair. So when the oil gets hot, starts to burn, produces carbon, which is abrasive, and starts to wear down the hard face, the gears will start to wear out.

However adding more oil, keeping it cooler, thus producing less little carbon particles, helps in the longevity of your gear box, and piston, and valves and pretty much anything that generates friction and heat.

China and the great BURP

China had an economic BURP this week and the markets all over the world suffered. If there is any one who doesn’t believe that the China has an impact on the global economy keep watching. If any one has noticed that almost 60% of consumer goods are made in CHINA. And I don’t mean Taiwan. China is producing more fossil fuel consuming devices then Japan and Korea. They learned how to do this when the Japanese went to china in the 80’s for cheap labor to produce motorcycle and car parts. The Chinese like the Koreans took it one step further, much to the chigrin of the Japs. Just look at all the cloned Hondas being sold. Yeah I know the quality is shit, but it’s getting better every month, and we, AMERICA are doing business with Chinese in a major way. So we are financing the Chinese expansion. Any one want to make a bet that Chinese money is involved in the Chrysler sale from Daimler???  The Dodge Ram 1500 Pick Up could say Made in China some time in 2012. You laugh… All you Harley guys should know your scooter is MADE IN JAPAN assembled in USA

The one good thing about this is that a Small group of Americans producing High Quality merchandise should flourish, and those lucky enough to afford this merchandise shall afford a good quality product. Furniture is a classic example. 95% of the furniture you buy is made in China. The rest is spread among USA, Mexico, Canada, Sweden, etc.

ONE WEIRD MORNING

CLEAR CREEK FEBRUARY 18TH

This had to be one of the weirdest trips to the creek yet.

To start off I had a ride clinic yesterday and invited a few guys that I thought would be good enough to ride with me and my usual partners.  One guy in particular whose name I don’t even know was especially, well how I can say it a world class asshole. It all started Saturday at the clinic. This guy is riding pretty good and obviously has good skills and controls, at least for Metcalf. On one of the more difficult trails he follows me up and after says “gee you should try that with out putting your feet down” I replied you were able to doe that?” “yes, I ride that trail every Saturday” I said “ well you should try and ride with us at Clear Creek Sunday” He said “ never been will try and make it” I said “ 7am flap jacks in Tres pinos 3 miles east of Hollister we meet for break fast and were off”

He replied “I will try and make it”

I never saw or spoke to the guy again that day.

So Sunday morning we are all eating breakfast and I was telling the guys that there maybe a Metcalf Expert coming with us. A few groans and grunts but no big deal. About half way in to break fast the guy shows up with his buddy who was also at the clinic. Its 7:30 and I am in a hurry to get out. He says gee I’m late. I said yeah we will meet you at the first camp OAK FLAT. His buddy has been there before so they felt confident they could find it. So here is the weird part
we get there and its frigiin Crowded and the guys and I decide to go to Jade Mill. Kevin and Jeff are behind me and we get unloaded and dressed. They remind me that the two guys are going to Oak Flat. I quickly put on a helmet and start my bike to tell them that we will pick them up on the way to the trails. I head down and on Road 1 is the guys partner but the guy and his bike are not there. I ask “where is your friend?’ Hey says “we did not see you at the first camp ground so he went to go look at you. I really did not think much about it and told him we are up the road at Jade mill and when he gets back to meet us there and get changed. I ride back to the truck and finish getting changed. The rest off the guys are doing the usual thing, Barry is feeding his dog. About 20 mins they show up. I said hey lets get going. So this guy all of a sudden just starts hammering me about not being at OAK FLAT, and how he went and looked for me. I asked him why you didn’t just wait for me I would have gotten you. SO he goes off again on me about he did not know that and I should have waited for him to get there. I said hey I said 7am breakfast you were late so why don’t you get ready and we will wait for you and let’s go ride. The guy just could not stop being mad. His voice starts to get louder, and start shrieking. I again said “hey get over it, get dressed lets ride” The guy just starts getting louder and more obnoxouis, so finally I get pissed and say “you know what, you’re not riding with me” he says “yes I am” I am floored. I look at him and say “NO your not, you not that good of a rider and your attitude sucks and we are going in to the hardest stuff there is out here.” The guy can’t keep from yelling and telling me I owe it to him because I put on this clinic... I finally have had enough and said good luck and shook both there hands. SO what does the guy do He flips me off. I just laugh and walk away. SO now the guy starts talking to my ridding partners about what an asshole I am and shit. He try’s to get them to wait. They all shake there heads and we all leave. Defiantly the weirdest start I have ever had.

Other then that we had an awesome day and got to bandito the quick silver route. The other thing I noticed is that Jade Mill looked like a week end at Hollister, tons of quads and squids. It was scary getting to the trails.

CLEAR CREEK, NATURE NAZIS AND LIFE

From Ed tobins blog:

Tickets:  The BLM rangers are out there writing tickets for riding out of bounds.  The cost, as I understand it, is $125. Word to the wise is to recreate responsibly and ride on designated routes and in designated play areas.  The reason for the recent rash of tickets is because the BLM needs to crack down on the illegal riding. In many cases they gave warnings for the for the first year of the new management plan while they were getting out the word about the plan and signing trails in the Clear Creek canyon area.  The grace period is over and if you are found on an undesignated trail or barren, you will get a ticket.

Event Courses:  In conjunction with the story on tickets, I need to make you aware of the BLM policy on event routes.  Both the Quicksilver and Wild Boar enduros will be using routes that are not open to the public.  These routes are being used under special event permits and may only be ridden by the organizers to prepare them for the event and by the contestants on the day of the event.  If you are riding around Clear Creek and you see a trail marked with blue, orange or pink ribbon and there is no brown BLM Carsonite trail sign, then you should not ride that trail.  Is this fucked up?  Damn right it is.  If it pisses you off, call Rick Cooper, the field area manger and let him know how you feel, especially since they plan to start charging fees next year so you can have a head on on the limited number of routes they have left open.  You can call him at 8310-630-5010.

Get a Life:  Brian LeNeve, poster child for the California Native Plant Society, was down at Clear Creek again last weekend, no doubt taking pictures around Larious Canyon and the Bowl.  Hey Brian, get a life!  Isn't there something better that you can be doing than driving around Clear Creek in that red Ford Escape?  Aren't there some fish to catch, some rocks to collect, or some flowers to take pictures of?  Get a life and leave us alone!

Its a shame or a sham? One of the greatest riding areas in the country is going the way of Hollister hills. The great crime of it all is the rumor that the basis of closure of many of the trails is the work of a BLM employee who was dismissed for falsifying data. Think the BLM will re-consider. Yeah right.

More on this later
